DEMONSTRATION OF SAFETY IN GARAGE

GENERAL SAFETY RULES

Do not block or obstruct stairwells, exits or accesses to safety and emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers or fire alarms.Straighten or remove rugs and mats that do not lie flat on the floor.Use a ladder or step stool to retrieve or store items that are located above your head.Use the handle when closing doors, drawers and files.Obey all posted safety and danger signs.Use caution signs/cones to barricade slippery areas such as freshly mopped floors.

Do not run on stairs or take more than one step at a time.Do not block your view by carrying large or bulky items; use a dolly or hand truck or get assistance from a fellow employee.Do not tilt the chair you are sitting in on its back two legs.Use handrails when ascending or descending stairs or ramps.Do not stand in front of closed doors.
Walk around wet, icy, slick or oily areas if possible.If required to cross a slippery surface, walk slow and flat-footed. Hold onto a handrail or solid object, if present, to maintain balance.Use provided aisles, walkways or sidewalks. Do not take shortcuts.Clean shoes of ice, water, mud, grease or other substances that could cause a slip or fall.Pull merchandise carts through areas of restricted visibility. 

Use a flashlight, turn on lights or take time for eyes to adjust when entering a dark room or dim surroundings.Do not move faster than conditions allow on slippery surfaces or in congested areas.Open one file cabinet drawer at a time.Use a cord cover or tape the cord down when running electrical or other cords across aisles, between desks or across entrances/exits.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY RULES

Do not use appliances and extension or power cords that have the ground prong removed or broken off.Do not connect multiple electrical devices into a single outlet.Do not overload electrical circuits with multiple outlets.Turn off electrical appliances and equipment when not in use.Turn off and unplug office machines before adjusting, lubricating or cleaning them.

OFFICE SAFETY RULES

Close drawers and doors immediately after use.Do not kick objects out of your pathway; pick them up or push them out of the way.Put heavy files in the bottom drawers of file cabinets.Store sharp objects, such as pens, pencils, letter openers or scissors in drawers or with the points down in a container.Keep floors clear of items such as paper clips, pencils, tacks or staples.Carry pencils, scissors and other sharp objects with the points down.Do not use extension or power cords that have the ground prong removed or broken off.Point the ejector slot away from yourself and bystanders when refilling staplers.

Do not connect multiple electrical devices into a single outlet.Do not throw matches, cigarettes or other smoking materials into trash baskets.Keep doors in hallways fully open or fully closed.Use a staple remover, not your fingers, for removing staples.Turn off and unplug office machines before adjusting, lubricating or cleaning them.Do not use fans that have excessive vibration, frayed cords or missing guards.Do not place floor type fans in walkways, aisles or doorways.Do not use frayed, cut or cracked electrical cords.Do not store or leave items on stairways or walkways. Clean up spills or leaks immediately by using a paper towel, rag or a mop and bucket.

MATERIAL HANDLING OR LIFTING PROCEDURE

Plan the move before lifting; remove obstructions from your chosen pathway.Test the weight of the load before lifting by pushing the load along its resting surface. If the load is too heavy or bulky, use lifting and carrying aids such as hand trucks, dollies, pallet jacks and carts or get assistance from a co-worker. If assistance is required to perform a lift, coordinate and communicate your movements with those of your co-worker.Position your feet 6 to 12 inches apart with one foot slightly in front of the other.Face the load.Bend at the knees, not at the back.Keep your back straight.Get a firm grip on the object with your hands and fingers. Use handles when present.Never lift anything if your hands are greasy or wet.Wear protective gloves when lifting objects with sharp corners or jagged edges. Hold objects as close to your body as possible.Perform lifting movements smoothly and gradually; do not jerk the load.If you must change direction while lifting or carrying the load, pivot your feet and turn your entire body. Do not twist at the waist.Set down objects in the same manner as you picked them up, except in reverse. Do not lift an object from the floor to a level above your waist in one motion. 

SHOP SAFETY

Follow these steps when handling hot automotive parts that have been removed from vehicles:

a) Place hot parts such as loose pipes, mufflers and shocks in metal containers that are labelled "Hot Metal Parts Only".
b) Press your thighs against fender by leaning into vehicle. b) Grasp the object by lifting with both hands.
c) Keep the object close to body, with elbows close to body. d) Turn body using feet, not twisting at waist.
d) Move the object to work bench and lower onto bench. 

Do not twist your body or maintain an awkward posture when trying to look under the dash.Direct engine hand tools away from rotating fan blades when the engine is running.

VEHICLE SAFETY

Before leaving the vehicle, engage the parking brakes and chock the wheels.Do not approach any vehicle until the vehicle stops and the driver exits.Walk behind the vehicle and remove any equipment, tools or other pathway instructions before getting into the vehicle. Sound the horn to alert nearby co-workers before backing the vehicle.Tie down, lash, or secure all materials and equipment hauled in the bed of vehicles.Stand clear of vehicles in motion.Do not mount or dismount a moving vehicle.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT A. EYE PROTECTION

You are required to wear suitable safety glasses, goggles, or face shields when your assigned task may result in hazardous exposure to your eyes.Some work examples where proper eye protection must be worn include exposure to:

a) Splashing liquid (bubbling, transfer of chemicals, etc.)
b) Injurious gases, fumes, and mists (spraying, use of chemicals, etc.)
c) Injurious radiant energy (welding, metal cutting, etc.)
d) Relatively large flying particles (chipping, grinding, etc.)
e) Dust and small flying particles (wood working, grinding, using power tools, etc.)
f) The above includes using air or electric driven power tools such as grinders, drills, Jackhammers, saws, compressed air lines, etc., and when working near, in or visiting work areas where eye protection is required.

Eye protection shall be kept in a sanitary and serviceable condition and shall be replaced when it becomes warped, scratched, or pitted. Prescription eyeglass cannot be substituted for safety glasses. You must wear safety goggles or a face shield over your eyeglasses. Safety glasses, goggles, and/or face shields shall be provided to employees working in areas requiring eye protection.

B. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

Approved respirators must be worn if exposed to harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gases, smoke, sprays, or vapours. This will include process such as, painting, hazardous material spill cleanup, etc. Do not use a respirator unless you have been trained and understand its limitations.Clean, disinfect and inspect your respirator regularly. Replace any worn or deteriorated parts. Store respirators in a convenient and clean location.

C. HEARING PROTECTION

Approved hearing protection devices shall be worn under all work conditions that have excessive noise levels.When required, the departments shall provide hearing protection devices.

D. HAND PROTECTION

Appropriate gloves must be worn if hands are exposed to hazards such as harmful substances, severe cuts or lacerations, severe abrasions, punctures, chemical or thermal burns or harmful temperature extremes.Latex gloves must be worn any time you are exposed to blood or bodily fluids.Insulated gloves must be worn when welding or working with high temperature appliances.

E. CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR PROTECTION

Shoes or boots suitable to the type of work to be done or the work conditions within the area shall be worn at all times.Loose clothing shall not be worn while working near or around equipment with moving parts. Remove clothing soiled by oil or chemicals to prevent skin irritations.

FIRE SAFETY

Fire extinguishers shall be in appropriate locations and properly marked. Fire extinguishers will be professionally inspected and tagged annually and should be visibly inspected monthly by the facility.
If an extinguisher has been discharged, immediately contact the Director for a replacement. Fire extinguishers must be accessible and are not to be blocked. Each employee should know the location of the fire extinguisher(s) within his or her area and how to use it.
