Measure Diesel exhaust smoke of diesel engine on Diesel Smoke Meter

Measure Diesel exhaust smoke of diesel engine on Diesel Smoke Meter

Theory: -

Diesel Smoke: - Particles, including aerosols suspended in the exhaust stream of the diesel engine which absorb, reflect or refract the light.

Capacity (N): - The Percentage of light transmitted from the source which is prevented from reaching a light detector.

Smoke Density: - A Fundamental means of quantifying the ability of smoke of small containing gas sample to observe light.

By convection, smoke density is expressed on a per meter basis. The size distribution of the smoke particle and the light absorption and scattering properties of the particle. In absence of blue or white smoke, the size distribution and the light absorption properties are similar for all diesel exhaust gas sample.

Working of the diesel smoke meter: -

Diesel Exhaust:- smoke meter is also used as a capacity meter, detects and measures the amount of light blocked in the sample of smoke emitted by the diesel vehicle .

The smoke meter reads and displays the smoke density giving a measure of the efficiency of the combustion. This makes the smoke meter an excellent diagnostic tool to ensure proper maintenance of diesel engine. For improved fuel economy and protection of the environment also. Measuring smoke density from diesel engine exhaust in generally used as smoke meter. Smoke meter provides filter- type smoke meter compressed with 150/IIS regulation and several types of opacitimeter for engine reserve and vehicle inspection.

Procedure of measuring diesel exhaust smoke on smoke meter: -

Collimated beam from the light source is absorbed and shattered by the particular exhaust emissions.A photodiode determines the light intensity of the attachment beam and the corresponding to a separate remote display partial flow continuous gas sample combined with a heated and temperature controlled smoke.Chamber compensates for changes in pressure and test condition to give you the most accurate reading possible. All modern smoke meters should measure diesel emissions in opacity (N) and smoke density (K) according to SAE 11667.

Why not use the method of gas analyzing as done with petrol engine.

Diesel is by nature oily thus clogging of the filter and sample piping of normal petrol gas analyzer. Those maintenance item are fairly expensive to be changed after every test. That is why the smoke material method for diesel engine has been implemented for all government.A modern smoke meter is almost no-maintenance device.

Application of diesel meter test: -

Evaluation tests for vehicle, engine and after exhaust treatment system.FSN for compliance with ISO.Mass measurement for dry soot in exhaust. On board opacity measurement.Inspection test for use diesel vehicles.General capacity measurements.
